TMJ and TMD Symptoms and TMD Treatments
The temporomandibular joints (TMJ) are located on the side of the jaw. TMJD disorders are common and affect an estimated 5 to 12 percent of the population. The signs and symptoms of TMJ disorders can vary from patient to patient, but the most common symptoms include jaw pain and headache locations in the cheek and jaw.
TMD refers to temporomandibular muscle disorders. These muscles protect the joint. While patients describe their pain disorder as“TMJ,” this isn’t exactly accurate. The TMJ is a joint, while TMJD is the disorder that impacts both the joint and the muscles. TMJD causes pain and discomfort but healthy TMJ muscles should not cause pain.
Dr. Frith and the care team at the TMJ and Sleep Therapy Center of St. Louis work closely with each patient to explain the treatment protocols, processes and costs. The Centre provides minimally-invasive TMJ therapies that are more affordable than invasive surgical procedures used to treat TMJ disorders.
Sleep Disorders:
Sleep Apnea Symptoms and Treatments
There are numerous types of sleep disorders, but sleep apnea is one of the most common and impacts millions of individuals. This disorder can affect both children and adults.
While the symptoms of sleep apnea can vary from individual to individual, the most common symptoms in adults include snoring, breathing difficulties, morning headaches, difficulty staying asleep known as insomnia, and difficulty concentrating. Sleep apnea can cause more severe symptoms, too. Some individuals suffer from high blood pressure, sexual dysfunction, unexplained weight gain, changes in urination, irritability, waking with a dry mouth, depression and anxiety.
Proper sleep habits and accruing restful sleep each night are important to overall health and wellness. Sleep apnea interferes with a patient’s sleep quality, and the sleep disruptions caused by sleep apnea lead to other health complications. In severe cases, sleep apnea could be life-threatening.
While children can be diagnosed with sleep apnea, younger patients also can suffer from several other common sleep disorders like bed-wetting, night terrors/nightmares, sleepwalking and insomnia. The TMJ and Sleep Therapy Centre of St. Louis offers therapies and treatments to address these sleep disorders and resolve childhood sleep apnea.
